House Rule #4
Through this series of posts I’ll be diving deep into the House Rules I’ve created for ATTN Seattle, and why I believe they’re important to developing a specific kind of community and atmosphere most people actually want in a gym.

House Rule #4 is RIGHT OF WAY
Leave the coaching to the coaches. Coaches and classes have priority access to space and equipment. Sharing is caring!
ATTN Seattle is led by a group of very talented and knowledgeable individuals that I am luckly enough to call my coaching staff. They have not only been good at remembering and reciting evidence-based fitness concepts- they live them. This is important to me because those kinds of leaders make the most sense. Being able to meld the practical with academia is the best of both worlds and makes for the best kind of learning. Kind of like the old written-in ‘Advanced Potions-Making’ in the HP series. Knowledge evolves and there are some special hacks you can try that work on some folks. Let us share that knowledge with you!
We know that some of you have experience and are excited to share when you start to recognize issues- hold on and let the coaches handle that. You focus on your work. If you’re really wanting to help, come talk to me and let’s start you on your coaching journey.
Since the rise of CrossFit and other forms of functional fitness, we've seen "gyms" evolve from warehouses of selectorized machines into "grown-up Montessori" boxes, where simple weights are now the key equipment.
The distinction lies in the understanding of how to use each piece of equipment. As the functional fitness community has grown, so have group class businesses.
We’re no different, but we also understand the importance of an Open Gym. Many places focus on one or the other, but my question has always been, “Why not both?”
Rule 4 is simply saying “SHARE” because weirdly when that is not said, and not the expectation people take that to the extreme.
Since group classes are our bread and butter, group classes get priority on space and equipment. That doesn’t mean anyone in open gym can’t use anything, but make sure you’re not interrupting. Both can coexist at the same time.
